The first epoch started in the reign of Alexander the Second with the adoption of judicial reform and the creation of a new court statute. This reform laid the ground for adversarial proceedings in the court ("mirovoi sud" or "mirovoi sud`ia"). The second epoch started after the revolution of 1917. The Bolshevik government created new justice in the face of revolutionary tribunals and changed the court statute. Mikhail Vostryshev, a writer and historian, wrote this book for a wide audience. It includes many interesting stories from Russian courts.
