The first part deals with the problems of the foreign economic environment and its impact on the shaping and functioning of the post-Soviet national economic system. According to the authors, within the next 5-10 years the main Russian task will be to weaken its one-sided dependence on foreign factors, to diversify its export structure, to intensify import-substitution and import-forestalling, and to ease the foreign debt burden. In the second part the authors describe Russia`s optimal model of economic development with an orientation on a transition to a post-industrial era.
