The National policy of the soviet government in the Caucasus in 1918-1945 was very complicated and sometimes contradictory. Military service was a kind of litmus test in relations between Caucasian peoples and the government. Being drafted into the army and especially being permitted to serve in military actions practically meant that a citizen of this land had passed the test for loyalty to the country as whole.
