The National policy of the soviet government in the Caucasus in 1918-1945 was very complicated and sometimes contradictory. Military service was a kind of litmus test in relations between Caucasian peoples and the government. Being drafted into the army and especially being permitted to serve in military actions practically meant that a citizen of this land had passed the test for loyalty to the country as whole. This book is about ideological and political aspects of the history of the military service of citizens of the Caucasus, limitations of this service, and other difficult situations to the point of rebellion, banditism, desertion, etc.
