Viktor Toporov (1946-2013) is a critic, translator of Byron and Goethe, editor-in-chief of the publishing house Limbus Press, and the founder of the Russian book awards National Bestseller and of Appolon Grigor`ev. He collected his recent current writings about post-El`tsin Russia published in Russian periodicals. In his writings he focuses on the confrontation of mass media, the last democratic institution in Russia, with the government which is successfully ending their independence and freedom. There are stories of new dissidents, heroes and anti-heroes, of Putin`s team. According to the author there is no political opposition in today’s Russia because a legal opposition is possible only in a democratic country.
