Poetika Motiva

The term "motif" is defined in this monograph as a repetitive element in folklore or literary narrative. This monograph studies various interpretations and uses of the term in works of Russian and foreign historians of literature in relation to other literary categories: narrative, story and plot, action and events, hero and character. The author offers his semiotic analysis of the motif in the semantic, syntactic, and pragmatic contexts, studies correlations between semantics of motif and its compatibility in narrative. Methodology of motif analysis is illustrated with A. Pushkin`s works. Igor` Silant`ev (b. 1960) is a professor of Russian literature and mass communications at Novosibirsk University. Bibliography.
