The region in study is the Upper Ob River, including the present day Novosibirsk and Tomsk districts. The time period under consideration is from the middle of the 19th to the beginning of the 20th centuries. This study is based on the theory of ethnos which considers the influence of ethnic processes upon the functioning of cultural traditions. Most of migrants in this area are of Eastern Slavic descent.
