Many historians consider Alexander the First (1801-1825) as a romantic, unstable person who was subjected to contradictory influences. The Russian historian Sergei Solov`ev (1820-1879) had the opposite opinion. He portrayed the emperor as a reformer, enlightener, worthy opponent of and victor over Napoleon the First.
