The European poet Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926) had close relations with several Russian poets and artists and with Russian culture as a whole. Among his correspondents were Aleksandr Benua, Leo Tolstoi, Marina Tsvetaeva, Boris Pasternak, etc. The poet was very attracted to Russian culture, studied Russian language and history, and translated Dostoevskii and Chekhov into German.
