This monograph describes and analyzes the traditional life cycle of the Buryats. Primary attention is paid to ritual as a mechanism for the socialization of an individual in the historical past and as a form of participation in the cultural revival of today. The authors explore the social and cosmic functions of rites as well as action, location, subject and other codes of Buryat traditional culture. One chapter deals with the semantics of "ekhor", the Buryat circle dance rite.
