His uncle Ivan Tkhorzhevskii, (1878-1951), was an assistant to the Russian prime-minister S.Iu. Vitte (1849-1915) and later of P.A. Stolypin (1862-1911). At the age of sixteen Sergei was arrested and spent six years in camps above the Polar circle. His memoirs are about the Russian writers Iu. Dombrovskii, V. Pikul`, and others, his famous uncle and the Tkhorzhevskii family, about his native city of St. Petersburg, and the people he met in his life.
