Volkonskii, Sergei Rodina: Vospominaniia
[ Motherland: A Memoir]
Moscow: Zakharov, 2002 399 p Hardcover. 12.5 x 20 cm ISBN: 5815902438 Language: RussianPrince Sergei Volkonskii (1860-1937) was the grandson of both one of the Decembrists and of his prosecutor A. Benkendorf. Sergei Volkonskii was a chamberlain and director of the Imperial theaters, a literary critic and historian. He emigrated in 1921. The author collected rich archival material, but after the October Revolution the documents were confiscated and destroyed; he remembered its contents, and utilized family legends and memoirs. This third book of his memoirs was published in 1923 (the first two are Lavry and Stranstviia). An essay by Marina Tsvetaeva about this memoir (pp. 371-397) is the afterword. Tsvetaeva proudly called S. Volkonskii her friend.
