Moscow: Zakharov, 2004 462 p Hardcover. 13 x 20 cm ISBN: 5893290882 Language: RussianThe great Russian geographer Vasilii Mikhilovich Golovnin (1776-1831), the first Russian sailor to circumnavigate the earth on the ship Kamchatka, writer, and vice-admiral of the Russian navy, was captured by the Japanese in 1811 and spent two years in captivity. He wrote a book about his adventure (1818) which was so good that it was translated into several languages and published in an adapted, lubok version for a wide audience. It was practically the first Russian book about Japan and its culture. The current book is a reprint of the last 1894 edition with introduction by E.Iu. Petri and with the addition of the lubok version.
