The genesis, unfolding, and outcomes of the world conflict of 1939-1945 have been studied based on the present-day level of scholarly knowledge. While considering the course of armed struggle in different theaters of the war, emphasis has been placed on the role of the Soviet Union in the defeat of Germany and its European partners, as well as on the contribution of the Western powers to the victory over Germany, Italy, and Japan. Much space is given to matters relating to the establishment of collaboration among the Soviet Union, the US, and Great Britain and to the political motives and strategic goals of these three countries. Many materials from foreign archives, and more from Russian archives and publications, have been introduced into scholarly use. Index. Bibliography (pp. 572-583).
