Grand Duke Nikolai Mikhailovich Romanov was one of the best known collectors and publishers of European and Russian painting. This is a photo-reprint of his second book as a publisher (1902) with thirty-nine portraits of Russian noblemen of the first quarter of the nineteenth century, including heroes of the 1812 war against Napoleon. The portraits were made by the French artist Louis de Saint-Aubin who visited Russia in 1807-1824, supposedly at the invitation of Aleksandr the First. Nikolai Romanov provided the portraits with biographical sketches. Parallel text in Russian and French.
