This volume of the series History of the House of Romanov in Memoirs of Contemporaries includes four works which portray the historic period called The Time of Troubles (early 17th century). The first one, Moscow Chronicle: 1584-1613, is by a German mercenary Conrad Bussov who was in the very thick of things of the epoch. The second is memoirs from Russian History, by the Greek hierarch and archbishop of Suzdal Arsenii Elassonskii (1550?-1626?) who was a witness to the dramatic reign of Boris Godunov, the accession to the throne and fall of the false Dmitrii, the civil war under Vasilii Shuiskii, and participated in the election to the throne of the first Romanov. The third work is a report of the Dutch poet E. Gerkman based on witnesses of contemporaries. The last work, new Chronicler, is a first publication in Russian of a chronicle of 1581-1630. Supplements include several documents of this period. Extensive comments and name index.
