Pevtsy i Pesni Bol`shogo Kunaleia, ili Akademiia Narodnogo Peniia
[ Singers and songs of Bol`shoi Kunalei, or the Academy of Folk Song]

Novosibirsk:  Knizhitsa, 2002
220 p. [2 ill.]
Hardcover. 14 x 20 cm
ISBN: 5860891040
Language: Russian
The Russian Folk chorus from the village Bol`shoi Kunalei (Buriatia) performs Russian calendar songs, charms, and spells which are part of cultural heritage of Russian aborigines and new comers of the Siberian region. They are direct descendants of the Semeisky Old Believers, who were expelled from their motherland, and who since the 18th century have lived in remote areas of Transbaikalia. They speak their own Semeisky dialect which is different from other dialects of this region. This monograph analyzes unique features of Kunalei singing, their repertoire and traditions. It is richly illustrated with rare photographs and has a score supplement. See also: Slovar` Govorov Staroobriadtsev (Semeiskikh) Zabaikal`ia (1999).
