The Historical anecdote, according to the author, is one the least studied literary genres. This monograph investigates the genesis, traditions of creation, and life cycle of this genre based on the corpus of anecdotes about the Russian Tsar Peter the Great (1672-1725). Most of this book is taken by analysis of the image of Peter as an "enlightened monarch" and of the most interesting plots and motifs of stories about him.
