This ninth volume of the Chekhov series is about one of Chekhov’s works, which was a failure when first performed, but which with the years turned out to be his greatest masterpiece. It includes papers presented at the international conference in Yalta (2001). The play Three Sisters is analyzed in these papers from various perspectives. Some of the articles deal with prototypes of its main characters and the realities the play represents. Some of the authors consider innovative aspects of the play, others establish parallels and connections with Pushkin, Shakespeare, and Ibsen, as well as Chekhov`s influence on modern drama. Indices. Three other volumes of series (limited number) are also available: Chekhov studies: Flight of the Seagull (2001); Chekhov and his circle (1996); Chekhoviana: Chekhov and the Silver Age (1996).
