He considered his mission to be establishing a direct connection between Russian symbolism and the German cultural heritage as represented by Kant, Goethe, Nietzsche, and Wagner. With this purpose in mind he opened his own publishing house. He also was mentor and impresario for his brother, the Russian composer Nikolai Metner, and a close friend of an ideologue of the Russian Symbolists, Andrei Belyi. This book is the first biography of E. Metner, including the last German period of his life. The author is a professor at Stockholm University. The book is based on previously unpublished materials from Russian, American and Swiss archives.
