A polemical book by a non-Orthodox Russian historian and archeologist about the most celebrated and controversial literary monument of Kievan Rus’. Sharply criticizing his opponents, such philologists and historians as D. Likhachev, L. Dmitriev, S. Valk and others, the author finds in the “The Tale of Igor`s Campaign" the oldest substratum connected with the work of the Bulgarian-Russian 11th century poet Boian, investigates chthonic and archaic motifs in the poem, affirms a new date of its composition, and proposes many new interpretations of the traditionally accepted text. He sees in the poem a fragment of the rich pagan and laic culture destroyed by Orthodox Church’s negative influence on Ancient Russian literature. The book does not limit itself to The Tale, but discusses general issues in textual analysis, history , genealogy, poetics, paleography, and the chronicles of Old Rus.
