The original name of what was later known as Theatrical Novel by Mikhail Bulgakov was Notes of a Dead Man. The novel is based on the real story of his relations with the Moscow Art Theater (MKhAT) and its artistic leaders K. Stanislavskii and V. Nemirovich-Danchenko in the course of rehearsing his novel-play Belaia Gvardiia/Dni Turbinykh and the play Moliere. A. Kobrinskii "decoded" this novel and disclosed prototypes of the main characters in the play. This book also publishes for the first time the complete text of the novel created in 1936-37, including Bulgakov`s versions. Comments to the novel and an appendix take most of the book (pp. 182-464). The appendix contains documents and materials related to the relations between Bulgakov and the Moscow Art Theater.
