It is a question of one of the fields in a soviet passport about nationality. For Jews and certain other nationalities this field was the main basis for discrimination in their attempt to find a good job, to be accepted to universities, to be allowed to travel, etc. This book is a collection of stories how the `piatyi punkt` defined the fate of a people. Inna Aleksandrova (b. 1931) became a political prisoner at the age of 19 and was rehabilitated in 1955. Among her characters are not only Jews but people of various nationalities. The first edition of this book was in 1998 and was acclaimed by critics and human rights activists.
