Ivan Sytin (1851-1934) came a long way from an illiterate peasant to the largest publisher in pre-Revolutionary Russia. This book tells the story of his entrepreneurial success, his troubles with the new political authorities after the revolution of 1917, and the price he paid for his survival. The book is a translation of one first published by McGill-Queen`s University (Montreal, Kingston) in 1990 which is also available. Appendices include several notes by I. Sytin and documents about his publishing activities. Comments.
