This monograph describes the customs, traditions, and beliefs that surrounded the birth of a child in various regions of Eastern and Southern Georgia in the second half of the 19th – early 20th century. The author shows ethnic peculiarities of mountain dwellers and plainsmen through the differences in birth rituals and children`s upbringing, and discusses various aspects of early education and traditional health care. It tells of the disapprobation experienced by childless couples, particularly by childless women, the jubilant attitude in connection with the birth of a boy, women`s cleansing rites.
