The author analyzes a mysterious poetic text, a spiritual verse about the travel of Egorii in Russia placing it against the backdrop of Old Russian book culture and icon-painting. Egorii, or St. George (Georgii Pobedonosets), is a respected saint in the Russian Church. Sokolov suggests a hypothesis about the identity of St. George of the verse with the Kiev ruler Iaroslav the Wise (978-1054) who contributed seriously to the dissemination of Christianity in Russia.
