Vasilii Rozanov (1856-1919) was a theater lover and wrote a great deal about Russian theater. This is the first monograph on his critical and philosophical views on the theater of the 19th-20th centuries. The book describes Rozanov`s vision of the art of acting, his reviews of the Antique cycle of plays in the Aleksandrinskii theater and his views on modern and classical Russian plays. The second part of the book includes Rozanov`s articles and some archival materials and polemics around Rozanov`s article Actor. Among the characters mentioned in his articles are leading figures of Russian theater: L. Bakst, A. Dunkan, M. Ermolova, K. Stanislavskii, F. Shaliapin, etc. This book is a very useful source on the art of the Silver Age in Russia.
