Works by the well-known Russian philosopher and economist M.I. Tugan-Baranovskii (1865-1919) were last published in his country in 1938. He belonged to the Kantian school of thought, and was unaffected by mystic teachings, Freudism, symbolism, or Nietzsche’s philosophy, very popular in his day. He held Utopian socialists in high esteem and prized Marx’s contribution to Economics. Tugan-Baranovskii upheld the theory of the gradual extinction of capitalism, though not for economic but for ethical reasons. He reflected upon the special role of the Russian intelligentsia, historically unattached to any class. This, according to the philosopher, engendered an idealistic humanitarian outlook which characterizes Russian intellectuals. Bibliography (pp. 438-495), bibliographic references, name index.
