Bishop Porfirii Uspenskii (1804-1885) was widely known as a historian of Eastern Christianity. This book is about his search for the Church songs which were performed in Byzantium and his studies of Greek church music of the 16th-19th centuries. He also collected old music manuscripts, obtaining them by hook or by crook in monasteries of the Christian East. The author is a medievalist from the Russian Institute of Art History. The book includes analysis of Uspenskii`s collection, a list of the Byzantine song repertoire, and 139 illustrations of scores and old manuscripts.
