This book includes papers prepared for the conferences of 1990, which took place in Ulan-Ude and Ulan-Bator to celebrate the 750th anniversary of a famous epos "The Secret history of Mongols". "The Secret history" gives a literary account of the events of the 12th-13th centuries when the Mongol tribes were brought together to form a powerful empire under Chingiz Khan. An epic work in essence, it also contains fragments of several folklore genres. The ancient language of "The Secret history" is understood by modern Buriats, Kalmyks, Bagruts, and Mongols. An annotated translation was first published in 1866. The present scholarly edition continues the multifaceted research of this work. Bibliographic references.
