Moscow: Iazyki Slavianskoi Kul`tury, 2003 256 p Serie: Studia philologica Hardcover. 14 x 21 cm ISBN: 5944571152 Language: RussianThis monograph reconstructs the philosophical and religious context of the 1860-1870s and the core of the polemics about nihilism. The author studies current writings and novels from both camps and shows the portraits of their heroes: the concepts of "nihilist" and "the new man" appeared in Russian literature and the public mind. Nihilistic and anti-nihilistic novels are analyzed as types of polemical novel as one type of philosophical and religious discourse on man and his social nature. The monograph traces the evolution of the polemic novel as a genre. Among the main disputants were writers and philosophers of that period: F. Dostoevskii, I. Goncharov, I. Kushchevskii, V. Krestovskii, N. Leskov, D. Mordovtsev, I. Omulevskii, A. Pisemskii, L. Sheller-Mikhailov, N. Solov`ev, N. Strakhov, I. Turgenev, etc.
