The Russian philologist Aleksandr Afanas`ev (1826-1871) is widely known for his collections of Russian folk and secret tales, as well as his three volume publication originally called Poetical Views of the Slavs Towards Nature. This book studies the mythology and pagan beliefs of the Slavs. It was and still is unprecedented in Russian philology in its scale and value. It can only be compared with the collection of German mythology by Jacob Grimm and The Golden Bough by the Scottish anthropologist J.G. Frazer. This is a reprint of the complete first edition published 1865-1869. Includes Afanas`ev`s biography, bibliography, list of sources used by the author, and index to this work.
