Mikhail Sholokhov (1905-1984), a Nobel prize winner, takes a special place in Russian literature. One of the reasons for this is the long-term discussion about the authorship of the Nobel prize winning novel “The Quiet Don”, started in 1930s and then revived by A. Solzhenitsyn and R. Medvedev. For others his name was consigned to oblivion for his cooperation with communist authorities. Viktor Petelin (b. 1929) does not doubt Sholokhov`s authorship, and focuses his analysis primarily on his personal life, his controversial relations with Stalin, Khrushchev, Brezhnev and the writers` elite. The biography is based on new materials, letters and other biographical materials. Bibliography.
