The area of his academic interests was very wide: from the eleventh century to the first decrees of the Soviet government. He was one of the contributors to the Encyclopedic Dictionary by Brokgauz and Efron. One of the areas of his study was the history of political movements in pre-Revolutionary Russia and the response of the monarchy towards them. This volume includes his best known works on the historiography of Russkaia Pravda and V.N. Tatishchev`s `Istoriia Rossiiskaia`, methodology of source studies, as well as his biographies of two Russian historians B.A. Romanov and I.I. Smirnov. All works are provided with commentary and analytical essays about Valk`s contribution to historiography and source studies of Russia. Indices.
