Moscow: Novoe Literaturnoe Obozrenie, 2000 488 p [16 ill.] Serie: Rossiia v Memuarakh Hardcover. 14 x 21 cm ISBN: 5867931072 Language: RussianThe subject of this book, Aleksei Arakcheev (1769-1834), was an officer and statesman, who made a successful career first under Pavel and then Alexandr the First. Arakcheev became a mythological figure in Russian history and therefore compilers put together about 50 witnesses to unmask his personality and activities. He became known for his project of "voennoe poselenie" (military villages), his patrimonial coats of arms (Loyalty without Flattery). Thank to the excellent and extensive commentaries, this book is a valuable source on the history of the culture of the 18th-19th century.
