Mariia Fedorovna Romanova (1847-1928), a Dutch princess, was the wife of Aleksandr the Third and the mother of Nicolas the Second. For fifty-two of her eighty-one years the empress lived in Russia. She outlived her son by nine years. For almost eighty years her name was erased from the memory in Russia. This is one of the very first studies about her social role and activity in Russian life based on documents from her archives in Denmark and Russia. Name index.
