Nikolai Ivanovich Novikov (1744-1818), a famous Russian publisher and editor, was also known an ideologue of Russian Masonry. This book is about the Moscow Masonic lodge, the Martinists. Catherine the Great disapproved his activity and interred him in the Shlissel`burg fortress for four years. Novikov became persona non grata for his allegedly anti-government actions. This monograph by historian M.N. Longinov (1744-1818) aimed to rehabilitate his reputation. It was first published in the mid 19th century. According to the author, Novikov became the object of court intrigues. The book is about the history of Masonic lodges in Moscow up to Novikov`s arrest in 1792, the interrogation of Martinists, Novikov`s last years after prison. It also includes documents of Novikov`s case, bibliography.
