[ Divine Service language in the Russian Church : History. Attempts of reform]
Comp. by N.Kaverin and G.Gulichkina; ed. by Archimandrite Tikhon (Shevkunov)
Moscow: Izdanie Sretenskogo Monastyria, 1999 411 p Hardcover. 14 x 21 cm ISBN: No ISBN Language: RussianThis book discusses a crucial problem in the life of the Russian Orthodox Church. It represents various positions in the dispute about the Divine Service language and the correction of Church service books in Russia from the 15th to 20th centuries. It collects the works of the most prominent authors (K.P. Pobedonostsev, Bishops Mefodii and Andronik, and others) who promote the Old Slavonic language as the unique language allowed in Church. Especially analyzed are the opinions expressed during the Council convoked in 1917-1918, the problems of Church reformation in the years of Communist rule, and Vatican Council II. Many articles by linguists, priests and historians, notably Archpriest V. Asmus, Archimandrite Sofronii, and D.S. Likhachev are included. Supplement comprises answers of some archbishops on the problem of Church service reformation and an article of M. Kriger (now Patriarch Alexis II) about the dangerous nature of Biblical societies for the Russian Orthodox Church.
