Preoccupied by such problems, the author investigates medical conditions in the Russian countryside in the period between the emancipation of the serfs in Russia in 1861 and the new enserfment of the peasantry in the process of Communist “collectivization”. The main problems studied in the book are the conditions of peasant habitation, the level of their nutrition, the people’s health, and health services in country.Based on the great quantity of published and archival sources, the author does not idealize the past and presents an uncomfortable picture of everyday life, and serious conclusions and recommendations for the present.
