This is the doctoral thesis of Hierophant Ilarion (Alfeev), a modern Russian Orthodox theologian, defended at Oxford University. It is a translation into Russian of the book first published in English in Oxford (2000).The life and teaching of Venerable Simeon the New Theologian (949-1022) is studied in the context of the Eastern Orthodox Church tradition. The author investigates his views on the Orthodox liturgy and the Bible, monastic study traditions, hagiographic, theological, ascetic, and mystical literature. Special attention is paid to the personality and teaching of Simeon the Studite, the spiritual father of Simeon the New Theologian. The main theme of the work is the relationship between personal spiritual experience and Church teaching. Supplements include new translations into Russian of some works by St. Simeon the New Theologian (949-1022) (pp. 503-668). Bibliography.
