The new pedagogical field pedology, which combines biological, psychological and social approaches to raising children, was a subject of tense discussion in post-revolutionary Russia. Before this discussion was forcefully terminated by Stalin`s government in 1936, this new science created many works which may again be of interest today. A. Zalkind (1889-1936) was one of the brightest adepts of pedology. His works collected in this book present an emotional historical cultural document where an apology for collectivism and socialist utopia is combined with valuable ideas about human education and development. Also included is an article by the pedagogue A.S. Zaluzhnyi with criticism of Zalkind`s ideas initiated by communist ideologues and published immediately after the party resolution which denounced pedology as "a false science".
