Moscow: Krutitskoe Patriarshee Podvor`e, 2000 400 p Serie: Materialy po Istorii Tserkvi Kniga 24 Hardcover. 14 x 21 cm ISBN: No ISBN Language: Russian
The history of the relations between the Russian state and the Russian Orthodox Church is presented in this book from the Church perspective. Shkarovskii describes the opposition of the Church to the soviet regime in the pre-war years: the “Josephist” movement (from the name of its leader, the Leningrad metropolitan Iosif); the Catacomb Church also called the True Orthodox Church; religious dissidents. Positive changes in this relationship happened during World War II. One of the chapters deals with international activity of the Russian Orthodox Church and of the Moscow Patriarchy. The period 1945-1965 brought temporary peace and strengthening of the Church position which was followed by the new "war" between the state and the Church in 1958-1964. The book is based on a mass of new archival documents and opens new pages in the history of Russian Orthodoxy.
