Stranitsy Istorii Russkoi Teatral`noi Publiki
[ Theater and viewers : Pages of the history of the Russian theatrical audience]
Moscow: Institut Iskusstvoznania, 2000 271 p pbk. 14.5 x 21.5 cm. Printing 100 ISBN: No ISBN Language: RussianThis is the last and unfinished work of the historian of theater from the Institute of Art Studies Efim Kholodov (1915-1981). His idea was to write the history of viewers from the first theatrical performances in 1672 through the whole nineteenth century. He managed to cover his topic up to 1752, the year when the first Russian public theater sponsored by the Russian merchant Fedor Volkov was invited to perform for the empress Elizavetta. This event later led to the emergence of the first state public theater in St. Petersburg in 1756. Despite the fact that this work waited for twenty years to be published, it still hold its scholarly value.
