Vsevolod Krestovskii (1840-1895) became famous after his best selling novel St. Petersburg Slum about St. Petersburg`s outlaws published first in 1864-1867. It is based on his personal studies of Russian prisons, brothels, courts, taverns, shelters for the poor, etc. He wrote several books on military subjects, including this one about the "physiology" of army life.
