Chistiakov, Ivan Sibirskoi Dal`nei Storonoi
Dnevnik Okhrannika BAMa, 1935-1936
[ Far away in Siberia : Diaries of a security guard of the Baikal-Amur Mainline: 1935-1936]
Introd. by Irina Shxherbakova
Moscow: AST, CORPUS, 2014 288 p. [24 ill.] Hardcover. 11.5 x 18 cm ISBN: 9785170847952 Language: RussianIvan Chistiakov was the commander of one of the platoons guarding a segment of the Baikal-Amur rail road construction site (BAMlag) in 1935-36. The platoon guarded not the construction project itself but rather the forced laborers, most of whom were prisoners. This book is likely to be the only personal testimony of this kind, although thousands of soldiers were employed by the GULAG administration. Most of these people were not inclined to keep diaries. The division between a security guard and a guarded was so murky that the guard could any day became a guarded. The original of this diary is kept in the archive of Memorial society in Moscow.
