This is a collection of classics in literary analysis by a distinguished philologist, expert on Russian poetics, and Professor at Harvard University K.F. Taranovskii (1911-1993). Selection for the present volume was made by the author himself. However, it took seven years for the book to come to press. It includes all of Taranovskii’s essays on Mandel’shtam revised and expanded for the Russian reader. Taranovskii bases his interpretation of Mandel’shtam’s images on the assumption that all the elements in the poet’s works have specific sources often lying outside the text, primarily in a different text. Thus the source text becomes an underlying theme of the analyzed poem. Other articles discuss problems of the linguistic analysis of phonetic structure, of the metaphoric and symbolic makeup of poetic texts. Also included are the papers: Russian disyllabic meter, On Andrei Belyi’s iambic tetrameter, and On the relationship between rhythm and theme in poetry. Supplements contain comments on Taranovskii’s works by Levington, Timenchik, Ronen, and M. Gasparov. Bibliography of K. Taranovskii’s works.
