This monograph studies the history of Russian peasant folklore related to books and reading. By "imaginary book” the author understands written texts which existed in the peasants` imagination but in fact did not exist. The author centers his attention on the status of books and the distribution of social statuses in the community based on their ties with books and reading. The book includes several topics, the last one is about the use of Christian dogmas from the Holy Book in the peasant culture. Appendices. Bibliography.
