She underwent many terrible ordeals: the Russian revolution, Civil War, emigrant wandering, life in poverty in Paris, becoming a nun, work in the Resistance, and death in the Ravensbruck camp. During the last eleven years Kuz`mina-Karavaeva was known as Mother Maria. This is the first academic publication of her works with detailed comments, rare photographs, and an introduction which reveals many historical and biographical details reflected in her writings: poetry, plays, letters, fiction and autobiographical prose.
