This book offers a new approach to the interpretation of the genre of "filologicheskii roman". The author analyzes literary works that have a philologist as their main protagonist, and that are written by either philologists or writers interested in literary history. The book follows the evolution of the genre from its inception in the 1920s with the works of Iu. Tynianov, V. Kaverin, and K. Vaginov; through the culmination of the "filologicheskii roman" in 1990s in the writings of S. Gandlevskii and D. Bykov. Special chapters are dedicated to unique "philological novels": V. Nabokov`s "The Gift", and A. Bitov`s "Pushkin House". The book analyzes the rules of the genre in terms of poetics and establishes "philological novel" as an indispensable depository for word games, literary puzzles and language collages, in which the author consciously unveils his literary technique, thus making the reader a participant in the impromptu literary game.
