The collaborationist policy of metropolitan Sergius in 1927 provoked wide-spread opposition within the Russian Orthodox Church. A Catacomb Church was formed, with bishops and priests working in secret underground. It was also called the "True Orthodox Church". This church opposed itself to the institutionalized Orthodox churches, in particular the Moscow patriarchy, and called them Pharisees. This volume includes memoirs of clergy and laity arrested and sentenced to camps. This page of the history of the Russian Orthodox Church is little studied, and the True Church is still persecuted.
